Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Nola is an ace ready to prove it in September. Nola is an ace because he not only can pitch well against good teams, but has proven it by actually doing it. The Phillies righty is not only worthy of a big contract extension as a true ace, but the team needs him fronting their rotation over the next half-dozen years.
Well, those who wanted manager Joe Girardi to pay with his head, or at least his job, finally got their wish. On Friday, the Phillies announced that Girardi had been let go. His replacement, at least on an interim basis, is bench coach Rob Thomson.
Despite their low overall organizational ranking, there are prospects developing in the system who could end up being impactful with the Phillies, including in the short-term.
Based on their current roster, the talent levels and questions marks involving the other contenders, and the fact that I believe Dombrowski will work aggressively in-season to further improve that roster at every chance, this 2021 Phillies team could win the NL East.
Kim Ng is qualified, experienced, and well-respected within the industry. The Phillies would be lucky to have her as their general manager. Frankly, the time feels right to make a little history.
