The Internet Baseball Writers Association of America announced today that five players have been elected to the IBWAA Hall of Fame.
Those five along with their vote percentage are Ichiro Suzuki (94.7), Billy Wagner (81.3), C.C. Sabathia (81.3), Andruw Jones (76), and Joe Mauer (76). It took being named on at least 75% of ballots cast from among the more than 800 IBWAA members in order to be elected.
IBWAA Hall of Fame selection does not mean that a player will necessarily be enshrined at Cooperstown. Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens were both elected to the IBWAA Hall of Fame back in 2018. Each failed to gain a plaque at Cooperstown during their 10 years on the BBWAA ballot. The HOF fates of these two legends of the game now rest in the hands of future committee voting.
Over the 15 years that I have been an IBWAA member my own voting style has fluctuated. At times I have been a “small ballot” guy, voting for just a handful of players. In other years expanding to vote for the maximum allotment of 10 nominees. That was the case this time around.
The 10 players who received my IBWAA Hall of Fame vote this year included all five who were enshrined: Suzuki, Wagner, Sabathia, Jones, and Mauer.
The other five players for whom I cast a ballot were a pair of PED-linked superstars and three who starred with my hometown Philadelphia Phillies. Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez were the first two. The former Phillies receiving my vote were Bobby Abreu, Jimmy Rollins, and Chase Utley.
Both ARod and Manny received solid support from the voters. Rodriguez received 52% of the IBWAA vote and Ramirez picked up 50.7%.
The Phillies contingent went this way: Utley (44%), Abreu (37.3), JRoll (20). This marks the sixth year for Abreu, fourth for Rollins, and second for Utley for Hall of Fame consideration.
The top vote-getter in the IBWAA process who fell short this time around was Carlos Beltran. He received 58.7% of the vote in just his third year on the ballot.
Other nominees for the 2025 IBWAA Hall of Fame and their percentage of votes received were: Andy Pettitte (38.7), Felix Hernandez (34.7), Dustin Pedroia (16), David Wright (16), Torii Hunter (14.7), Francisco Rodriguez (13.3), Omar Vizquel (13.3), Mark Buehrle (12), Ben Zobrist (4), Curtis Granderson (2.7), Brian McCann (2.7), Russell Martin (1.3), Troy Tulowitzki (1.3%).
Carlos Gonzalez, Ian Kinsler, Hanley Ramirez, Fernando Rodney and Adam Jones all received no votes.
